The main purpose of air conditioning is to control the temperature and humidity in a space, resulting in the comfort of those occupying that space. It’s a luxury we have come to expect as we swelter through a dramatically hot summer.
Think of all the places you’ve been today. From the bedroom and the lounge to the office and the supermarket, each space likely had a dedicated heating and cooling system designed to keep you cool during summertime.
But when that cooling system falters, we need to quickly determine what’s gone wrong, why it’s happened, and how to fix it. Below we’ve collected some of the most common air conditioning issues that can lead to operational faults.
These errors result in a hot environment that is simply uncomfortable to bear! Before you lose your cool (literally) have a read though these common faults.
Why does my air conditioner…
Leak water?
Before you read on, determine whether the air conditioning unit is leaking inside your home or office, or if the unit is leaking on the external component. There’s a difference in the cause of each.
My air conditioner is leaking inside my home!
The most common cause of an air conditioning unit that is working as usual except for the fact that it’s dripping water indoors is dirty or clogged air filters. Thankfully, this isn’t a daunting task.
Water is dripping from the external air conditioning unit
Generally, this is normal, but the amount leaking is dependent on the temperature that your thermostat is set on as well as the temperature outside.
Make odd noises?
A strange noise here and there shouldn’t worry you too much, but in the case where you find the noise is new or offers some degree of concern, it might be a problem with the air con belt. It may be worn, damaged, or faulty, and as such, require replacing.
Smell bad?
There are a lot of reasons why you might notice a pungent odour coming from your air con unit. The most common explanations include:
- Overheating parts (which may pose a fire risk)
- A dirty and clogged unit can result in an unpleasant smell
- Mould and mildew that develops on the drain line or pan
- However, it could also be just a bad smell outside that has been brought inside by the unit
No matter the cause, a bad-smelling air conditioner is unpleasant.
Turn on and off?
Faulty wiring could be a culprit here. Not only does faulty wiring affect the effectiveness of your unit, but it is also dangerous fire hazard. It can also trip your safety switch.
Cool some rooms while others remain hot?
This is one of the most common complaints we have. The explanation is simple: your cooling system is unbalanced.
This is a typical sign of an older and outdated system, and if you’re finding your current system is underperforming, it could warrant a complete overhaul.
One of the best solutions is AirSmart’s Venturi system. These slick grilles fit into the smallest of spaces, adding complete cooling comfort without affecting the aesthetics of a home or retail space.
AirSmart Venturi is incredible: air is spread evenly throughout an entire space, resulting in a consistent temperature from floor to ceiling. Learn more about the clever AirSmart Venturi system here.
Your current air conditioning system
Think carefully about your current cooling system.
- How old is it?
- Does it cost you too much to run and maintain?
- Have you considered completely upgrading your system?
Perhaps now is the time to engage the professionals to strategise, plan, and implement a completely refreshed cooling (and heating) system?
